Drug overdose is currently the leading cause of unintentional death among adults in the United States. Data collected in 2014 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that 18,893 people died from prescription opioid overdose and 10,574 people died from heroin overdose. Government and community organizations have been investing time and resources to educate citizens, patients, and prescribers and put an end to this tragic epidemic.
On December 14, 2016, Governor Nathan Deal expanded access to naloxone for treatment of opioid overdose by asking the Georgia Board of Pharmacy to issue and emergency rule and change naloxone to a C-V exempt drug that can be dispensed by pharmacists. This training provides the information you need to safely and effectively help those at risk for opioid overdose.
